Why Learn CPR?

CPR saves lives. In the case of any emergency, Performing CPR can reduce the severity of the situation by extending time until medical professionals arrive. The immediate assistance is more vital before the arrival of paramedics, particularly if the victim has stopped to breathe.

The most important reason why CPR is essential is that in the recent days Cardiac Arrest is very common and can happen at any place – may it be home or recreational zone or workplace or in any common place. In general, Public awareness on performing CPR and reducing the risk factor is very less. It is very essential to know that the first few minutes of a Cardiac Arrest is the most crucial and can reduce the risk by administering basic medical assistance like Performing CPR in an organized manner.

Here comes the necessity of anyone either layperson or student or elderly person irrespective of ages to have basic awareness and knowledge in performing CPR and rescuing the victim suffering from cardiac arrest.

When to Perform CPR?

In General, CPR should be administered only if

  • a person shows no sign of response
  • stops breathing
  • remains unconscious
  • the breathing is not normal.

Purpose of performing CPR is to ensure normal oxygen flow circulated to the vital organs and to ensure the victim is safe enough to be taken to the hospital for further medical help.

Common situations when CPR can be administered are when a person is near drowning, heart attack, cardiac arrest, drug overdose or in any other condition when a person is unconscious and not breathing.

It is equally important to know that the risk factor for Cardiac Arrest also depends upon how healthy an individual lifestyle is? There are additional factors that adds up to the vulnerability. Some of them are

  • Adults with conditions such as hypertension, heart failure, diabetes and chronic kidney disease
  • People with a personal history of arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)
  • Those with a history of drug or alcohol abuse
  • Any common person with imbalanced lifestyle.
